New Maldives golf course opens
A new golf course has opened on the Maldives as the island destination continues to increase in popularity with holidaymakers.
The nine-hole course is situated in Shangri-La’s Villingili Resort and Spa in Addu Atoll and opened to golfers on 27 March. Suitable for recreational players and more serious golfers, the majority of the holes are par three, with an average length of 123 yards.
A resort spokesman said that fresh water would not be used to desalinate the greens and that organic fertilisers would only be used sparingly, allaying fears over any potential environmental impact.
Tourist numbers to the Maldives continue to grow year by year, underscoring its appeal as a destination for luxury holidays.
For example, arrivals of visitors on Maldives holidays have nearly doubled in the past decade, hitting a new high of more than 931,000 last year.
