Bangkok begins Futsal preparations
Thailand has kicked off the countdown to the FIFA Futsal World Cup, which Bangkok will host at the end of 2012.
A ceremony was held in the Thai capital to mark the unveiling of the official logo and mascot for the tournament, with the slogan Siamese Smile chosen for the event. Futsal, a five-a-side variation on football, is a popular sport in Thailand.
The upcoming competition sees 24 teams compete, with four times World Cup winners Brazil most likely to prove the toughest opponents. But while luxury holidays to Thailand have become synonymous with pristine coastlines and exotic beaches, now world-class sport can be added to the list of attractions.
The South-East Asian tourist hotspot will play host to the tournament from November 2 to November 18, 2012, with the final taking place at a newly built stadium in Bangkok’s Nong Chok district.
Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra said hosting the prestigious event was a great opportunity for his country. Thailand holidays look set to be sought after in 2012, by holidaymakers, travellers and now sports fans.
